Caroline Scruggs

Thereminist, composer, and explorer of sound

Caroline Scruggs is a thereminist, composer, and explorer of sound whose work often unfolds beyond the concert hall. Her theremin performances—captured both on stage and in nature—have reached over 15 million viewers on social media, bringing the rare and otherworldly instrument to a global audience.

Traveling the world with her instrument, she performs in forests, deserts, mountains, and shorelines—places where the theremin’s voice meets the natural world. These performances are as much conversations as concerts: the instrument responding to wind, silence, and space, creating moments that blur the line between human presence and the environment.

Pair this with her visual artwork, using the cyanotype (“sun-printing”) process to capture foraged flora of Richmond, Virginia, onto paper and clothing alike. This art experience perfectly complements her music.

Throughout her work, Caroline invites her audiences to experience music not only as art, but as connection to nature, to wonder, and to the unseen.
